They do background checks before choosing photographers especially if it is a big project like a wedding.

Photography classes are now being offered in different schools all over the world. Some classes can even be taken online if you want to. Choosing the right photography class should be done carefully though. You cannot just enroll in a class without thinking how applicable it can be to you and your future career as a professional photographer. There are several factors you need to consider when choosing a photography class.

  1. Relevance

How relevant is it to the form of photography you want to get into? Do you think you can apply what you will learn from this class in the future? Check the syllabus to know what topics or subjects will be taught in that class. Does it include the seo for photographers that you want to learn in class? Assess carefully how relevant the topics are to your goals.

  1. Instructor’s Background

Find out about the level of experience and skills of the instructor. Do you think he/ she is competent in teaching that class? You can also try to connect with his/her past students and learn how the instructor handles the class. Is he/she enthusiastic when teaching? Does he/she share secrets or techniques in photography or reluctant in doing so? You can get answers to these questions by asking former students or people the photographer had worked with.

  1. Time Availability

Does the time fit perfectly in your schedule? How many weeks will it take you to finish the course? If you are busy with work or family, you can consider getting an online photography class. An online photography class usually allows you to study or learn at your own pace and whenever you have time to spare.

  1. Online vs In-Person

Another factor to consider is whether you will take an online or in-person photography class. An in-person photography class has a fixed schedule and actual classroom setting wherein you really need to go to the specific classroom. On the other hand, an online class allows you to learn photography via the Internet. No need to travel to go to school since you can just get instructions, modules or books via email or other online communication tools. You can also study whenever time permits so you can basically learn at your own pace. Asking questions is possible by getting in touch with the photographer via email or at a specified time he/she is online.

Consider the factors stated above when choosing a photography class so your time and effort will be spent well.

A Guide to Beach Wedding Photography

Weddings have become more diverse as far as locations are concerned. One of those popular locations is the beach. It should not come as a surprise as beach weddings, after all, provide a beautiful and romantic backdrop to celebrate such a joyous moment in a couple’s life. But the allure of a beach wedding in recent years goes beyond that.

sunset-1057463_1920 (1)

As a photographer like the Scottish Wedding Photographer who will be covering a beach wedding, it is important that you get to capture not only the beauty of the wedding as a celebration of love but also the beauty of the setting that is the beach. As a guide to help you better capture the moment, here are some of the characteristics of a beach wedding that you should not miss in your photos.

  1. Natural lighting – Since beach weddings are held outdoors, you don’t need to worry about nor possibly spend much on lighting in the venue for some good output the photos. The natural light from the sun will already take care of the lighting for you. On your part, you don’t have to think about these things and let the photographer take care of making that sunlight work on those beautifully lighted photos.
  2. Scenic venue – one does not have to spend or worry much on the interiors. The beach itself provides a natural and artistic scenery that you can tap to provide a beautiful and natural backdrop for your wedding. Best of all, it is available to you without paying extra, especially if you will not require to have a section of the beach blocked off.
  3. Intimate atmosphere – Beaches are naturally intimate type of places, better appreciated when there are a few people who go there. So if you wish to have an intimate wedding ceremony, having it at a beach is something to seriously consider. Even if a beach is a popular tourist destination, having a beach wedding provides a greater level of intimacy that having a hundred guests would ruin such a mood.
  4. A wedding and vacation in one – For some couples, especially those who are working around a budget, a beach wedding is a cost-saver such that they don’t have to spend time and effort separately for a wedding venue and a vacation place and incur more expenses in the long run. Beach weddings provide the convenience for both. Not to mention, the guests also get to enjoy a vacation and a wedding at the same time.
  5. Less formalities – As stated above, beach weddings have a greater level of intimacy. As such, there is a lesser need to be formal, whether it is on the aspect of ceremonies or when it comes to outfits. You can be as flexible as you want to be for a beach wedding, so feel free to create a unique and memorable moment in the process that you as a couple and your guests will get to enjoy.
  6. Casual affair – Speaking of outfits, there’s no need for to wear formal outfits at a beach wedding. One can opt to wear a simpler wedding dress while guests can wear something less stiff and a bit more casual and comfortable that is appropriate for a beach wedding. Besides, traditionally huge wedding gowns would not cut it since they would look awkward in the beach setting anyway.

wedding-743984_1920

With all these said, keep in mind though is the outdoor nature of beach weddings. As such, nature can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. Unpredictable conditions like rain or winds may make those wedding plans go awry. Careful planning is very important to ensure that such conditions would not ruin what should be a memorable moment. Make sure you got all bases covered as much as possible; it won’t hurt to have a Plan B at hand in case things won’t get to go as originally planned.

There is no doubt that beach weddings are beautiful to witness, making a moment as memorable as a wedding even more memorable with the setting a beach provides. As long as it is planned very well beforehand, a beach wedding provides a unique experience the couple and guests will surely get to appreciate and cherish.

Pros and Cons of Online Photography Classes

professional photographyA career in professional photography is among the most desired professions today. Many people especially photo hobbyists decide to learn advanced photography through taking photography classes. There are photography courses being offered in schools today in almost all parts of the world. The good news is that with the modern technology we have now, most of us already have access on the internet which resulted to the formation of online photography classes.

Photography courses can now be taken online by those who are interested to learn professional photography. You can get to know about a specific photography type like alternative wedding photography, newborn photography or portrait photography. Some are happy about these online classes while there are those skeptics who do not think that online photography classes can help them learn photography.

If you are interested in taking an online photography course but have doubts about it, then you have to think carefully if this suits you or not. You have to weigh in the pros and cons of online photography classes and then you can decide if it is for you or not.

Here are the pros and cons of taking photography classes online.

Pros

  1. Learn anywhere, anytime

As long as you have access to the Internet, you can take the class at your own convenience. You can choose to study while inside the coffee shop, in the comforts of your own home or even at the park. There are downloadable learning materials that will be shared to you by your instructor via email or thru a website which you can study when time permits.

  1. Easy transfer of information

Books and training materials will be accessible through a website or a medium set by the school or instructor. There is so much ease in the transfer of information since everything is set online. You can even have a chat session with your classmates or instructors if someone (most likely the instructor) sets it. You can exchange information with fellow students through this online chat session.

  1. More affordable (usually)

Depending on what courses you plan to take as well as in what photography school you enrolled in, you can possibly spend less when taking an online course. No need to buy books or other materials if you have no budget for such since everything is readily online. Some schools also set their online course to be cheaper than in-class so you will have to compare the costs when choosing between online and traditional classes.

Cons

  1. Less interaction among students

There is no real, face to face interaction among students which some might think is not good. Other students find this beneficial though since there are students who are more efficient in learning on their own without others interacting or “disturbing” them.

Students who take online course also learn at their own pace which means they most likely won’t see each other even online unless a weekly or regular online chat or conference is set.

  1. Difficulty in getting help

You take the class depending on your availability or schedule. There is a possibility that your instructor is not online when you are so you cannot ask questions or help in case you need some clarifications about a particular topic in photography. A solution to this is to ask for your professor’s contact information like phone, mobile, email addresses and even social media accounts. You can also ask what times and days the professor is online so you can get in touch and ask for help when necessary.

Consider your time, budget and even your personality when deciding to enroll or not to an online photography class. Make sure that the instructor is really skilled like this wedding photographer Cheshire. Look also for a photography school that is accredited to you can get a diploma or a certificate once you have finished the course.

Top Mistakes Wedding Photographers Make That Must Be Avoided

Admittedly, there are some wedding photographers who came into the field of wedding photography with little to no prior knowledge of the business. Thus, they tend to commit some serious mistakes as to how they practice their profession. This piece deals with some of these mistakes so they could be avoided or corrected for the sake of their profession and the wedding photography industry as a whole.

  1. Not providing a legal contract for wedding photography services

Photography is a fun and potentially rewarding career, but you cannot be a successful photographer if you do not take of the legal matters of your business. If you want to be a professional photographer like Heather Finocchiaro you must readily provide needed legal documents. Most important among these is the contract or agreement of services wherein the details of the service you provide are written in black and white. This is so that you and the client have an understanding of what you can or cannot provide as a photographer, not to mention avoid possible legal headaches along the way. Also, many clients prefer to deal with photographers who can provide a contract.

  1. Not limiting the hours of work nor charging for extra time

Having a proper agreement in place will also help you define the scope of work that is expected of you. What if the plan for the day was for a four hour event but due to various reasons the day became twice as long? Are you expected to stay for the same rate you agreed on? Limiting the hours of work and setting the possible extra charges for the extra time will help make your work easier on your end.

wedding-91797_1280

  1. Buying the “best” camera that you do not need.

There is nothing wrong with wanting the best camera available, especially for your profession. Just don’t let it come to a point in the future that you will realize that the camera is too much for what you need and you will regret spending that much for the camera in the process. The point here is this: buy the camera that best serves your needs, and those needs do not require a top of the line, expensive camera. After all, your work will be judged by the images you produce and not the model of your camera.

  1. Bringing ego to the job

Then there is that ego problem a number of photographers sadly have. They think highly of themselves because they get to make people look good. Keep in mind that wedding photography is not about you. It is about two people getting married and you are the one chosen to document the most important day of their life. Better leave that ego at home and come with an open heart and open mind.

  1. Agreeing to work with another team without coordination

There are those instances that we may be requested or forced to work with another team. The bride might book you but the groom’s family have booked their own photographer. Both have their own work attitudes and do not wish for the other team to mind them and vice versa, a recipe for disaster in the making there. It is very important in such cases to make sure both teams are coordinated, like splitting the responsibilities between the two teams and cover for one another if necessary.

photographer-791269_1280 (1)

  1. Giving all the images you shot, including the unflattering ones

As a wedding photographer, you should expect that of the hundreds of photos you will take on the wedding day, not every photo will turn out great. It is your job to make sure you the photos you select to give to your client couple are the best. Including the unflattering ones does not make you a competent documentarian. Rather, you will be perceived as sloppy for being careless that you took those ugly shots, serving as a blemish to your career. And you cannot let that happen.

  1. Not paying enough attention to post production

Somewhat related to the previous point, because not all photos will look perfect after shooting the image, the importance of post-production must be repeatedly emphasized. Some photographers abhor doing post-production because they feel it makes them less than skilled photographers which is not the case. Some photos may not look that good but can still look stunning with the help of post-production, saving the image from being wasted and make your clients happy too.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Wedding Videographer

wedding videographyDuring the wedding planning, an engaged couple normally writes down the things they need for their wedding as well as the people they have to hire. The list will surely include the venue, the caterer, florist and wedding photographer. Some couples add a wedding videographer to their list while others don’t. Do you think the service of a wedding videographer is really important for your wedding? Or is it just another unnecessary expense?

Well, we have talked to couples who recently tied the knot and asked for their thoughts on how important or not it is to hire the services of a professional wedding videographer. Several couples regret not having one while there are pairs who were satisfied with the outcome of their wedding even without a wedding videographer.

If you are still undecided on whether to hire the professional services of a videographer or not, here are some pros and cons of getting one. This will hopeful help you come up with the right decision.

PROS

  1. Share moments

A wedding videographer can record your wedding from start to finish or just some special parts of the wedding ceremony. The wedding video that he/she will produce can be shared to your loved ones later on. Your future kids will be able to witness how your wedding went and how their mom and dad professed their love to each other.

  1. Record fleeting happenings

A wedding usually occurs once in your lifetime and since a lot of things happen around during the wedding ceremony and party, there are certainly happenings that you have missed. These fleeting happenings or moments might have been captured on camera by the professional wedding videographer you hired.

  1. Real emotions

Your professional wedding photographer might be able to produce photos that display mixture of emotions among the couple and their guests. But then, a wedding video goes a step further and gives you the real, genuine, lifelike way things happened and how your guests happily shared this special day with you.

  1. Professional, high quality video

Yes you can definitely have someone among your flock of guests take a video of your wedding but do you think he/she can deliver the kind of video you expect to see? Remember that professional wedding videographers have the skills, knowledge and equipment which they can use to produce professional, high quality wedding video while your assigned videographer won’t have any of those.

CONS

  1. Additional cost for the couple

A wedding videography does not come cheap. It can be an added burden to the couple who really cannot afford it. But then, if you think you can squeeze it in your budget by lowering the cost of other wedding expenses then do so. As long as you hire a skilled professional videographer then you will not regret this added cost.

  1. Possible conflict with the wedding photographer

Some couples believe that a possible conflict may arise between the wedding photographer and videographer since both are going to cover the wedding and be all around the venue. Well, that is not likely to happen if you hire real professionals. Professional wedding vendors know how to get along with people in the same industry. They already know how to adjust or give way when necessary. Furthermore, if you hire both from the same company then much better since the two have worked with some weddings before and can plan together on how to cover your wedding.

  1. Intrusive

A wedding videographer will be following you around during the day maybe from the wedding preparations until the end of the wedding party. The recording of events will depend on what is agreed – whether to record only significant parts of the wedding or the entire wedding flow. If you think a wedding videographer might intrude or disturb your wedding and you feel uncomfortable followed at, then do not hire one. Remember though that you can give specific instructions to a wedding videographer and he/she will gladly conform to your requests or instructions.

Now, that you have read the pros and cons, you can now weigh in on whether hiring a wedding videographer is worth it or not.

Be Creative In Your Photography

One thing about wedding photos is that they tend to have the same style, the same angle. Nothing wrong with it, but they don’t normally show how much fun and memorable such events can be. As photographers like peterborough photographer, it is important that you get to capture these moods and emotions well. One way to do it is to capture more creative types of shots which are more unique, more memorable to look at, and does better in capturing the atmosphere the people felt in the wedding. These photos not only takes you to that day but lets you see it in a different but fun light.

To achieve this, here are some helpful tips to capture those creative wedding photos:

Experiment with your gear

First things first, weddings are not the time for you to try out your new gear. There is so much at stake at a wedding there leaves little to no room for mishaps just because your new gear did not work well as expected or you are trying to get the hang of how your new gear works. If you are going to try it out, better do it on a free day and not on an important occasion.

However, once you know the ins and outs of your equipment and what it could do, feel free to be daring in changing lenses or setting up new gear with your camera to achieve more creative but artistically beautiful shots. Always remember to be quick in doing such switches as you may miss an important moment if you are too slow.

Experiment with shooting

lighthouse-486596_1920

Even if you don’t have any new gear to use during that day, you can always capture creative shots using the gear you already have. For starters, you can try out using the existing color filters of your camera, especially using the monochrome filter that gives your photos a black and white look. You can also try shooting from other angles and create more dramatic or artistic shots that would grab the attention of the viewer of the photos.

Have a Second Shooter…or You Could Be One

If you are a photographer who likes to experiment with more unique shots for creativity’s sake, you should know that taking those shots can make you miss some important moments, even if you are quick to change gears when necessary. That’s why it is important for you to have a second shooter who can cover those shots that you are unable to take for some reason or another.

Conversely, you can be the second shooter and be able to take some more creative shots by getting in touch with a more experienced photographer and get to work under his wing. Another advantage here is that you also get to learn new concepts or methods from professionals that you would be able to use yourself to be better at your skills.

Whether you will have a second shooter or be one yourself, always remember to coordinate with your partner so everything that needs to be covered that day are duly covered.

Be on the Lookout for Other Sources of Inspiration

Apart from other photographers, there are many sources available at your disposal for creative wedding photography ideas. There are numerous publications, websites, and photos that you can check out to see those impressive examples of photography that you can take your cue from. Just be careful not to border on plagiarism. You may be taking inspiration from another idea, but take time to put your own twist or element to make your photos more unique and more of your own that you can be proud of.

Take On Daily Exercises

Another method that you can use to improve your creative photography is through constant photography exercises that lets you do some experimental shots that will eventually improve your craft. One photo a day projects in social media would be a good venue to showcase such work as you can get to have feedback to help you improve your creativity as a photographer.

To Do’s Before a Newborn Photo Shoot

newborn photographyFor would-be parents, the arrival of their first born give them so much joy and excitement. Some parents would right away hire a newborn photographer to take shots of their child while in the newborn period. Newborn period basically refers to the first two weeks and this stage in a child’s life only happens once. This makes a newborn photo shoot significant and thus must be given importance. Both parents and the newborn photographer should exert effort to prepare for this newborn photo shoot.

If you are new to professional newborn photography, here are some things to do before a newborn photo shoot.

  1. Discuss details with the parents

You should first have a formal meeting with the parents to discuss how and when the newborn shoot will be. Some expectant moms will hire you before the baby comes out so you will have to arrange the waiting days within the expected delivery date. It is important for you to explain how the shoot will be done as well as how the parent should prepare their newborn.

After you have explained all the necessary things and answered all their questions regarding newborn photography, make sure you have a contract signed and agreed by both parties.

  1. Prepare the necessary props and gear

Once contract has been signed and schedule has been set, it is now time for you to prepare for the shoot. Inspect your cameras, lenses and accessories and make sure they are working properly. Also be sure that all newborn props to be used during the photo shoot are all dry-cleaned and ready for use.

Among the necessary camera accessories and newborn props to bring are the following

  1. Tripod
  2. Lenses
  3. Extra Memory Cards
  4. Extra Batteries
  5. Comfortable Blanket
  6. Bean bag
  7. Baskets or Crates
  8. Stuffed Animals
  9. Hats and Headbands
  10. Hammock
  1. Help the parents prepare their newborn

To make your photo shoot become successful, the parents must make sure that the baby is in a deep sleep all throughout the photo shoot. Advise the parents to keep the baby awake a few hours before the shoot. They also need to ensure that the baby is well fed before schedule so the newborn will be in great mood and in deep sleep.

  1. Ready yourself to be patient

There are instances when the baby suddenly wakes up or becomes irritable thus making the session take longer to finish. Be prepared for it and ready yourself by being patient at all times. If the newborn won’t sleep, do not fret because you can still take some shots while the mom or dad is holding the child.

  1. Prepare safety measures

The safety of the newborn should not be taken for granted. You need to ensure that the baby is safe all throughout the session. Hire an assistant if possible to stand near and keep an eye on the baby during the photo shoot. You should also check all your props and make sure they are free from dirt or harmful object.

All newborn photo sessions are important so you should always give your best and do the necessary preparations before each shoot.
